This norm applies to security barriers and fences designed to limit child access to inground residential or public pools.
Barrier and fencing safety solutions can equally apply to above ground pools.
A protective barrier should be capable of stopping access to the pool area by children under 5 years old by straddling, climbing or accidental opening.
To enable use without any kind of risk or hassard by older users, adult or child, the protective barrier should feature a safe, secure access point.
- The minimum height between the highest leaning point and the lowest point of the fence's upper section must be greater or equal to 1,10 m.
- The stakes of the barrier should not have rough surfaces.
- Sharp edges, metallic wires, pointed, sharp or cutting elements and angles should not cause a cutting or stabbing hassard.
- The fencing and it's access point should not be an element of risk if a child attempts to enter: pinching risks should be avoided.
- A two-handed action must be installed on the access point of the fencing to avoid accidental opening by young children, however, the opening system must be fast and easy to operate by an adult.
- The fencing, the stakes and access point should be capable of resisting to a falling weight of 50kg.
When the pool is situated in an open space which is easy to access.
A minimum height of 1,10 m creates a physical barrier to children less than 5 years old to approach the pool. Its access point opening system should be impossible to open for children under 5.
